With a long-held desire to introduce an artificial turf pitch on site, Stafford Grammar School turned to leading sports contractors S&C Slatter to transform an under-utilised space into an all-weather sports pitch.
Stafford Grammar School is an independent school for girls and boys aged 3 – 18 situated at Burton Manor, Staffordshire. A centre of academic excellence, with a 100% A-level and GCSE pass rate, the school boasts an array of facilities across its 38 acres.
Taking great pride in delivering fantastic opportunities both within and beyond the classroom, the school offers an expansive extra-curricular programme, ‘SGS Extra’ which encompasses the school’s mission to ‘offer a broad and inspiring programme of sport‘.
Already offering a variety of both indoor and outdoor sporting facilities, the school constantly strives to support their mission and sought a trusted sports contractor to help guide them on the construction of their first artificial turf sports pitch.
The key driver behind the new facility was to enable all-weather sport, specifically for safe, year-round hockey and football training.
Our team conducted a site survey to assess the available space and discuss the school’s objectives. Working with the school to identify an area of under-utilised land, our dedicated design team used this to inform a conceptual design proposition, recommending the best surface and drainage options to provide a safe, durable, outside space suitable for all-weather sport.

On-site, our grounds teams stripped the topsoil on the existing site, levelling the ground ready for the construction of the sub-base, base and 15mm shock pad. We then installed a sand-dressed Hockey Gold Pro artificial turf system from our exclusive partner FieldTurf – chosen for its proven performance, durability and versatility to support a variety of sports to a high standard.
The S&C Slatter team worked in close collaboration with the school throughout the process to deliver a new artificial turf training pitch that would provide them with the year-round, all-weather sports facility for hockey and football that they desired.
The multi-use pitch was designed to fit in an under-utilised space adjacent to the school’s tennis courts and is line-marked to allow for both hockey and football training, while the surface is also suitable for lacrosse, tennis and netball, perfect for games sessions.
