In 2018, The University of Cambridge undertook a £2.5m investment into their Wilberforce Road sporting facility, selecting S&C Slatter to deliver two new sand-dressed floodlit artificial turf hockey pitches, as an addition to their existing sand-dressed artificial turf hockey pitch and athletics track.
Both pitches feature a two-layer macadam base, 5m perimeter fencing with partial 1.2m barriers and LED floodlighting to 500 Lux. S&C Slatter’s surfacing and civils department were also involved in the project, to provide an extension of car parking facilities on site.
The facility is home to Cambridge University Hockey Club, hosting a range of University, College and Community Club training sessions and matches. With over 52 sports clubs at the University in total, The Cambridge University Hockey Club (CUHC) is regarded as the biggest and most successful mixed sports club at the University.
Running three men’s teams and three women’s teams, the University’s first teams compete at the highest level of regional hockey, so the addition of two new pitches represented a necessary and major investment into Cambridge University Hockey. CUHC are not however the only club to call the facility home.
The Sports Service were delighted to welcome the Cambridge City Hockey Club to the site in 2009. CCHC is one of the largest hockey clubs in the East region and are also the largest club in Cambridge, with 12 Senior league teams and over 300 junior members. The Club can now use the Pavilion as their clubhouse and train and play matches on the three hockey pitches. It is hoped that the partnership between the University, University Club and City Club can help improve hockey provision, recruit new players, coaches, volunteers and officials and drive forward performance in the Cambridge area.
