S&C Slatter were overjoyed to join our group partners White Horse Contractors on stand at the 75th annual SALTEX Exhibition 2021 this week, where our stand was awarded best in category!

Celebrating 75 Years of SALTEX

Challenging, unprecedented, cancelled – words we’ve seen time and time again since March 2020. So, it’s particularly special to be able to use words like bustling, social, a success to describe SALTEX 2021.

Hosted by the Grounds Management Association (GMA), SALTEX has been a key event in our industry’s calendar and was sorely missed last year – so the buzz was palpable when walking into the NEC this week for the show’s 75th Anniversary.

Proven partnerships

Exhibiting with our group partners White Horse Contractors, our teams thoroughly enjoyed welcoming an array of new and familiar faces onto our stand and were delighted to be awarded Best in Stand Category for excellence in exhibition practice and customer experience at SALTEX 2021.

We were certainly in great company at the show, situated alongside White Horse Contractors’ hybrid turf partners GrassMaster Solutions, who together recently made history with the UK’s first hybrid turf pitch installation at an independent school.

Getting social

As well as the event itself, we celebrated the return of SALTEX with “The Social @ SALTEX”, an exclusive evening event hosted by White Horse Contractors, GrassMaster Solutions and Intelligent Play, which was a fantastic opportunity for the team to catch up with clients, partners and industry peers after so long apart.

A huge thank you to our group partners White Horse Contractors, as well as our team, partners, visitors and the GMA for such an enjoyable time at SALTEX, where were able to truly showcase the benefits of our collective offering.

It was a testament to the GMA to see such a strong turnout for the event, a fitting celebration for its 75thanniversary and a powerful sign of the strength and resilience within our industry.

See you next year!

Joining the company during a particularly busy time, chartered health & safety practitioner Jordan truly hit the ground running thanks to his extensive experience across a variety of sectors.

Bringing with him a particularly unique viewpoint on the importance of health and safety in the construction landscape, we sat down for a quick Q&A to find out more about his background, role and experience.

Hi Jordan, welcome to the company! How have your first couple of months been?

The first couple of months have been great, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the team and understanding the culture. It’s been busy, but I always say that it would be boring if it wasn’t a challenge.

Tell us a little bit about your background

I am a chartered health and safety practitioner and have worked in this capacity now since 2012 across a range of industries including construction, warehousing and logistics, rail, retail, property management, and healthcare. Prior to gaining my H&S qualifications, I worked as an installation operative for a playground construction company for a few years but changed direction after suffering a serious workplace accident.

Can you tell us a bit about your new role and which teams you work with?

As S&C Slatter’s Health, Safety, Environment, Quality and Training Manager (or ‘HSEQT Manager’ as I have coined it!) I’m fortunate that I get to work with all of the teams, and support all the S&C divisions. In a nutshell, you could say that my role is to effectively manage all aspects of quality, health, safety, environmental and training, and drive the development and implementation of continuous improvement strategies across the company.

How has health and safety in our industry changed in the wake of the pandemic?

Well, aside from having to knock elbows or bump fists instead of shaking hands, the fact is, a lot has changed! Even with the high vaccination uptake, there are elements of this so-called ‘new normal’ that are likely to be with us for years to come – perhaps even forever.

Without being able to work from home, the construction industry (among others) had to take the first, unsure steps into the unchartered territory of the ‘new normal’, accommodating perspex screens, hand sanitiser and PPE into their every-day working lives. This served as a blueprint for businesses of all types across the nation, and there are little signs of them being phased out.

On a positive note, prior to the pandemic, we “shouted safety but whispered health” but it does seem that the balance has shifted to more accommodate health and wellbeing. The industry has shown real resilience with new ideas on how to collaborate and innovate to enable projects to restart safely.

What are the biggest challenges you find that our customers face when it comes to ensuring appropriate health and safety?

I think that employers struggle to find the right balance when determining risk mitigation. There is endless information out there, and sometimes it feels like you’re stuck down a rabbit hole when trying to find the right solution. When faced with this ‘analysis paralysis’ – sometimes it’s better to go with your gut instinct. There isn’t a one size fits all when it comes to ensuring appropriate health & safety, and the legislation is designed to put the onus on the employer – after all they know their business better than anyone else. It just requires a bit of time and effort to put the right foundations in place.

What are the biggest challenges for you in your role?

Based on the first few months, I would say time is my biggest challenge, we are so busy! The most important part of my role is continuously reviewing and improving our HSEQ management system to ensure compliance and enable maximum efficiency.

What attracted you to your role at S&C Slatter?

The opportunity to work with industry leaders in a role that I can develop.

What advice would you give to any organisations planning a new sports construction project?

My advice would be to consult S&C Slatter. 😊

Finally, what do you like to do outside of work?

I love sport and played a lot of football and cricket growing up, I watch my beloved Liverpool whenever I can. My biggest passion though is probably food – growing it, cooking it and of course eating it.

A huge thank you to Jordan for taking time out to answer these questions, especially during such a busy time. We’re glad to have you on board as our new health and safety manager – welcome to the team!

Your project, in safe hands.

Putting the safety of our staff and clients is at the forefront of what we do. Every project we undertake involves our dedicated health and safety manager, contracts managers and site managers to ensure best practice is delivered on all of our sites.

If you’re considering a sports construction project and want to ensure maximum quality with minimal risk, get in touch with Jordan and the team on 01635 345 21 or email info@sandcslatter.com.

We’re delighted to announce our new partnership with PRO Padel Courts, the UK’s Premier padel court manufacturer, for padel court construction in England and Wales

Meeting demand for the world’s fastest-growing sport

With more than 30 years’ expertise in sports facility design, construction, and maintenance, we combine heritage with innovation to offer clients the very latest technologies in both traditional and emerging sports, such as padel.

We’re proud to be partnering with PRO Padel Courts to design, construct and maintain high-quality padel courts in England and Wales.

Paul Regan, founder, PRO Padel Courts, commented:

“We are excited to be partnering with S&C Slatter, who have a first-class reputation built around the quality of their work over many years. We have many shared values and both parties pride themselves on delivering the best quality products and services to their clients. It is also imperative that our high quality padel court structures are placed on expertly constructed groundworks – and we know we can guarantee this with S&C Slatter.”

What is padel?

One of the world’s fastest-growing sports, padel is a racket sport combining elements of tennis and squash and is recognised by the LTA as “easy to play, fun and extremely sociable”. Boasting over 12 million players worldwide, the sport is suitable for all ages and abilities, perfect for encouraging participation in schools and for retaining and attracting new members for leisure centres and tennis clubs.

Padel forms part of the LTA’s key strategies to grow participation and, as the national governing body for padel, they plan to develop the growth of the sport, with a goal of 400 courts in place across Britain by 2023.

25% smaller than a traditional tennis court, padel courts take up less space, making them a great option to maximise underutilised space for sport in schools and clubs.

Find out more about padel on our dedicated padel court page.

Padel built for the UK

With over 25 years’ experience in the global tennis industry, Paul Regan, founder of PRO Padel Courts, followed the growth of padel across Europe – and as interest in the UK began to rise, he recognised the need for a court designed to withstand the great British weather.

Where padel is most commonly played in temperate climates, imported padel courts can encounter issues such as rust and corrosion on UK soil, with drainage systems not suitable for all-weather performance.

PRO Padel Courts are the only padel courts manufactured in the UK and designed specifically for the UK’s climate. Using British steel and glass, courts are finished with unique zinc weatherproofing and come complete with a 10-year warranty against rust and corrosion.

Jason Douglass, Group Director, S&C Slatter, commented:

“With a commitment to work with the very best manufacturing partners in our industry, we are delighted to be partnering with PRO Padel Courts for padel court construction in England and Wales. We strive for constant innovation in both traditional and emerging sports, such as padel. We’re thrilled to be able to offer clients a one-stop solution for their padel needs, from initial design to planning, finance, construction and maintenance.”

With clients including The Roehampton Club and The Bourne club, PRO Padel Courts are designed for optimum performance, safety, and durability – whatever the weather.

We’re delighted to be embarking on this exciting new partnership with the premier UK manufacturer, offering first-class padel court construction for schools, universities, tennis clubs and leisure centres.

S&C Slatter were delighted to commence construction on a new multi-use games area (MUGA) at Stafford Grammar school this week.

A sporting first

The new multi-use games area marks the first artificial turf sports pitch to be constructed at the school. We were thrilled to meet with the Stafford Grammar’s Headmaster, Lee Thomas and Bursar, Richard Baum as groundworks commenced, not far from the school’s stunning Victorian Manor House.

The new artificial turf MUGA will feature cutting-edge turf from our exclusive partners FieldTurf – FIH, FIFA and World Rugby Preferred Turf Producers. The Hockey Gold Pro artificial turf system will include line markings to support the play of both hockey and football, with the sand-dressed system also suitable for lacrosse, tennis, and netball.

Speaking on-site, Lee Thomas, Headmaster, commented:

“We pride ourselves on offering a wide variety of enriching opportunities at Stafford Grammar School. Sport is so important for our pupils’ all-round development. We encourage all of our pupils to get fully involved and this new MUGA will improve our facilities for hockey and football training.”

With several facilities across the school’s 38 acres, the school had been planning to introduce an artificial turf pitch for some time, with planning permission granted in April of this year to convert an area of spare land close to the main school building.

Suitable for between 60-80 hours of usage per week, compared with 6-8 hours per week for natural turf surfaces, the new artificial turf MUGA will offer a safe, consistent, and high-performing playing service for year-round, all-weather sports.

Providing for pupils

Stafford Grammar School is a co-educational independent school for pupils aged 3 to 18 at Burton Manor. A centre of academic excellence, the school prides itself on offering a ‘stimulating and inspiring education’ for over 400 pupils.

Part of this offering includes the provision of excellent sporting and extra-curricular opportunities to develop pupils’ sporting, personal and social skills.

We’re thrilled to be supporting the school in their development plans, ensuring they continue to provide first-class facilities for pupils to thrive. We look forward to revisiting the site to see the new pitch in action next term!

It was all smiles at Wimborne Town FC’s New Cuthbury ground yesterday as S&C Slatter handed over the club’s new cutting-edge 3G Training Pitch. The pitch was officially opened by Wimborne’s Mayor, Kelly Webb, alongside Ken Stewart (Club President), Tony Grant (Club Chairman) and Graham Bell (Commercial Director).

The 3G training pitch handover marks the completion of works for S&C Slatter at New Cuthbury, having also produced the design specification for the facility, with our sister company White Horse Contractors handing over the club’s natural turf stadia pitch in November last year.

Firm foundations for the future

Wimborne Town FC’s new home on Parmiter Drive, affectionately known as The New Cuthbury, has been a dream come true for the club, whose former pitch featured an ‘infamous’ slope with no permanent training facility on site.

Realised in part through developer relocation, the new facility was designed by our dedicated Design and Planning Division to FA’s Sports Ground Grading C, suitable for the National League System, ready to support Wimborne Town FC in their future league ambitions. The ground boasts the brand new 3G training pitch and natural turf stadia pitch as well as a new club house, car park and spectator areas.

A small outdoor ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the entrance to the 3G Pitch on Tuesday 22nd June, with Club Chairman Tony Grant joined by Wimborne Minster’s Mayor Kelly Webb, as well as additional representatives from S&C Slatter and the club’s board and coaching teams.

Speaking at the pitch opening, Tony Gates, Club Chairman commented:

“The 3G completes what is a fantastic facility for the club as well as the local community. There’s nothing like this in Wimborne and we’re very lucky we’ve been able to achieve this. It’s been fantastic working with S&C Slatter. The process has been so smooth, we barely knew they were here it was so well managed!”

Serving both club and community

Across a total of 22 teams within Wimborne Town FC, players of all ages and abilities will benefit from the new 3G pitch, for both training and match play. The first and development teams will train on the pitch twice a week, protecting the natural turf stadia pitch for optimum performance on match days, with the club’s academy utilising the 3G pitch daily for player development.

With 3G pitches suitable for 60-80 hours of usage per week, the club is also set to generate revenue through pitch hire, with the club already “over 75% booked” before opening, ready to serve the local community.

The town’s mayor, Kelly Webb, who officially opened the pitch, noted how the facility boosts Wimborne Town’s sporting offering:

“There’s a great strength in sport in Wimborne already with success in rugby and athletics. This new pitch is phenomenal and a welcome addition to our leisure facilities locally – we have a lot to offer for a small town!”

A permanent home for Wimborne Town

The new 3G pitch means that the club now has the high-quality facilities required to train and play on one site, which they were unable to do at their old ground. During the winter months, the club would hire 3G pitches in the local area to train, which was inconvenient and costly for the club. First team manager James Stokoe explained: “Twice a week we’d be at two different locations training, which was hard work.”.

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, James sang the praises of the new 3G and natural turf pitches:

“The whole place is just fantastic, we’re really lucky to be here now thanks to the hard work from the board of investors and Graham Bell especially – personally I can’t thank everyone enough.”

Experienced in football club relocation, S&C Slatter were thrilled to construct the new 3G Pitch, with our design, construction, surfacing & civils teams all delivering works on site alongside our group partners White Horse Contractors.

Across The Slatter Group, we offer a one-stop-shop solution for clubs wishing to improve their grounds. From initial design and planning through to natural, hybrid and artificial turf pitch construction, ancillary works, civil engineering and specialist maintenance, clubs can rely on one dedicated point of contact from concept to completion.

We were delighted to be in attendance for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and hear first-hand the impact the new facility has already had – and how it will support the club’s ambitions for the future. With the first team excited to have their first training session on the new 3G pitch this Thursday, we look forward to cheering them on in their first pre-season friendly on July 6th!

We have delivered more pitches to the highest levels of non-league football than any other.

Following an uncertain but busy year, The Slatter Group continues to expand, continually investing in our people and technology. We’ve been catching up with some of our newest recruits to welcome them to the team whilst getting an insight into their new roles and past experience.

Stephan Edwards joined us as an estimator in late March, along with fellow newcomers Andy and Chris. All three are already proving to be great additions to our sales, design and planning teams!

Hi Stephan, welcome to the company! How have your first few weeks been?

It has been fantastic. I’ve been here for just over a month now and from day one everyone has been so warm and welcoming. I have managed to visit some of our live sites and have been really impressed with the works and attention to detail that our site managers are producing.

Tell us a little bit about your background

After I left school, I took an apprenticeship doing general building works then moved on into decorative horticulture. After college, I worked for a hard landscaping company then took the plunge and set up my own landscaping company 7 years later, working on bespoke garden designs and restaurant gardens throughout Warwickshire and the West Midlands. In 2016 I became the estimator for a commercial landscaping company in the West Midlands which led me to becoming a Senior Estimator for a national landscape company, then to my most recent role as Head of Commercial and Operations for a pan European landscape group.

Can you tell us a bit about your new role as Estimator and the team you’ve joined?

My role is to receive new enquiries from different sport disciplines and build a competitive tender that is beneficial for all parties. The role varies from day to day: from reviewing specifications to going to site and surveying the proposed areas, then trying to look at the project from all angles to ensure that the client is getting the very best value for their project.

How has the sports construction industry changed over recent years?

As I am still fairly new to the sports construction side it’s hard for me to go into too much detail – but speaking with the team, I’ve learned that the most significant advances within our industry are the parts that you don’t often see. Improved works to preparation and drainage systems for example are greatly improving the performance and longevity of playing surfaces themselves.

With the UK, like other countries, in and out of lockdown over the past year, how has the industry had to adapt?

I spent nearly all three lockdowns working in the housebuilding sector and it has been testing to say the least. Housebuilding, as with sports construction, never really stopped, so ensuring the safety and wellbeing of site teams whilst hitting deadlines was a key role for me in 2020. The one good thing that I did see was the camaraderie between trades on site and in person. If one good thing can come out of this pandemic, then I hope this continues within the industry!

What are the biggest challenges you find that our customers are facing?

Everybody is essentially a year behind, so planning, funding and everything else in between is taking longer. The pandemic has also caused problems with procuring materials too. Timber, plastics components, and concrete products have a much longer lead time which also leads to price rises due to supply and demand.

What are the biggest challenges for you as an Estimator?

For me it is making sure our clients get the very best from their projects whilst being viable. There is so much literature and different specifications to read through, making sure we have captured every element is key to a project’s success.

What attracted you to your role at S&C Slatter?

S&C Slatter are the leading sport construction company in the UK. From my interview with Ben, I had a great feeling about this company. I love most sports, so combining this with work is an absolute dream for me. My Partner always tells me I spend too much time reading about and watching sports but now I have a great excuse!

What advice would you give to any organisations planning a new sports construction project?

Seek advice. Whether it is a consultant, S&C Slatter or other recently developed sports facilities, there is so much groundwork that has to go in and the key is to have this ready for a smooth transition. Our Sales team and design and planning team have a wealth of knowledge and are always willing to help.

Finally, what do you like to do outside of work?

I love gardening and have a young family who like to keep me busy all the time. When I do get a chance to escape, I love to watch Coventry City FC or Coventry RFC – who play on a pitch built by S&C Slatter! If I am very lucky, I like to meet up with my friends in Wales to watch the rugby.

Thanks so much to Stephan for taking the time to do this Q&A with us – welcome to the team!

We are delighted that following testing by Labosport, Salesian College’s 3G Pitch has successfully retained its World Rugby Regulation 22 Certification, four years after the pitch’s construction in 2017.

The 3G artificial turf pitch was constructed by S&C Slatter and completed in March 2017 and also features fencing, floodlighting, a spectator area and equipment for rugby and football, all delivered by our in-house teams.

Advantage Salesian

Salesian College is an independent Catholic grammar school for boys aged 11-18 with a co-educational sixth form. The school’s extra-curricular programme is an important part of its offering, with all newcomers to the school enjoying one games afternoon (the equivalent of two lessons) and one dedicated PE lesson per week as part of the year 7 curriculum.

With a busy programme of sports both within the curriculum and as part of the school’s extra-curricular offering, the school required an all-weather pitch that could handle both rugby and football, delivering consistent safety and performance standards throughout the year.

The 3G artificial turf pitch was constructed to World Rugby Regulation 22 performance standard in 2017, featuring a cutting-edge artificial turf system from our exclusive World Rugby and FIFA Preferred turf producer partners FieldTurf.

Named in honour of the school’s former headmaster, Patrick Wilson, the pitch was officially opened by Mr Wilson and former All-Blacks legend Sean Fitzpatrick in a ceremony followed by a match which saw the school’s First XV continue their unbeaten run in a fitting victory over Halliford School.

Re-tested in March 2021 by Labosport, the pitch encountered no issues during performance testing, passing with flying colours. The report confirms that the pitch continues to perform to World Rugby Regulation 22 standards, a certification it will now hold until 2023 when it will be re-tested again.

World Rugby Preferred

Salesian College’s 3G Pitch is just one of many World Rugby Regulation 22 Certified rugby pitches we have constructed, in exclusive partnership with World Rugby Preferred Turf Producer‘s FieldTurf.

You can see a selection of additional World Rugby Regulation 22 pitches we have constructed below:

One of a handful of Preferred Turf Producers, FieldTurf were selected by World Rugby as a company who “practice the highest possible standards of manufacturing in rugby turf”, “to assist facilities to identify to highest possible player welfare and performance standards”.

It’s not just about the surface, however. As with any true partnership, it takes the combination of our 30 years’ expertise in sports construction, with FieldTurf’s innovative artificial turf technology, to produce pitches built to World Rugby Regulation 22 certification, that continue to perform to that same standard year after year.

World Rugby Regulation 22 was introduced in 2003 to ensure that 3G artificial turf pitches are built to replicate the performance and safety of good quality natural grass, with sufficient durability. Most recently revised in 2020, the Rugby Turf Performance Specification produced by World Rugby is a “rigorous testing programme for artificial turf” that assesses safety, performance and durability and encourages the continual improvement of rugby turf.

With the school’s fantastic approach to social media and video streaming, it’s been wonderful to see the Wilson Pitch be put through a rigorous testing of its own by pupils and the local community, with inter-house and inter-school tournaments for rugby and football held on the pitch alongside regular PE lessons, with Salesian College’s teams achieving fantastic results over the years.

We’re thrilled that the 3G Pitch has once again passed World Rugby’s testing programme, remaining World Rugby Regulation 22 compliant until 2023 when we’ll be excited to see the pitch re-tested once more!

Winning Partnership for Rugby

S&C Slatter works exclusively with World Rugby preferred turf supplier FieldTurf to construct first-class rugby pitches for schools, universities and rugby clubs, including the Championship’s first-ever 3G Pitch at Coventry RFC.

Today is a very exciting day for S&C Slatter – we’re celebrating our 30th Anniversary!

Ensuring current guidelines were adhered to, we were thrilled to be able to present the Slatter family with a small gift to mark the occasion and celebrate the strong growth and sustained levels of customer delight achieved over the past 30 years.

Celebrations at Stephen’s Yard

Ben O’Connor, Managing Director, and Jason Douglass, Group Director, presented members of the Slatter family with a 30th anniversary gift on Wednesday 12th May at our offices in Enborne, home to the company since 1994 and named after our late co-founder, Stephen Slatter.

To overcome coronavirus restrictions and ensure employees working across the country could get involved in the celebrations, personal video messages were recorded and gifted to the family alongside a specially made 30th celebration cake.

Ben O’Connor, S&C Slatter Managing Director, commented:

“S&C Slatter’s legacy extends beyond just the thousands of fantastic sports facilities we have delivered in the last 30 years. The long-term employment, personal development and incomes the company has provided for families based both locally and nationally is a source of great pride. We’re honoured to have built a company with long-term sustainable growth and a team of brilliant individuals that thrives together, with a deep-rooted commitment to honesty and integrity.”

30 years of hard-won success

Founded in 1991 by Stephen and Caroline Slatter as a maintenance, cricket and play provider, S&C Slatter has evolved to become an industry leader in the design and construction of sports pitches, courts, athletics tracks and associated facilities. Operating on the founding values of quality and integrity, the company has earned an exceptional reputation for quality, value and first-class customer service, resulting in continued growth over the last 30 years.

Enjoying rapid expansion under the leadership of current CEO, David Slatter, we have a long list of achievements to be proud of, from becoming the world’s first International Hockey Federation (FIH) Certified Field Builder to delivering Europe’s first Major League Baseball field at the London Stadium.

You can see more of our achievements in our company timeline or by viewing our video below:

It’s not only about elite sport however, with a proud history of delivering first-class sports facilities at a local, regional and global level, putting the same level of care, workmanship and pride into every project, regardless of size. Perhaps the most recent example of this is the completion of a much-loved athletics track for Castle Primary School, while simultaneously commencing works on two world-class athletics tracks as part of the Alexander Stadium redevelopment.

Jason Douglass, Group Director, commented:

“In my 10+ years at the company, it’s been a pleasure to witness such enormous growth, thanks in no small part to the continued leadership and presence of the Slatter family. The shared vision, intelligence, direction and integrity in which the business and employees operate reflects our heritage, advancement and the core family values upon which S&C Slatter was founded.”

Maintaining the family ethos

An important part of S&C Slatter’s success has been maintaining the family values Stephen and Caroline founded the company upon. David’s two brothers Philip and Mark Slatter also work with the company – Philip heading up the Cricket,Play & Maintenance divisions and Mark working with White Horse Contractors, acquired by the company in 2019.

With over 100 employees, staff retention has remained high, with many employees having worked at the company for over 20 years – a testament to the wider family feel that has been retained despite substantial growth.

With exciting new partnerships recently announced in the athletics, finance and hybrid turf sectors plus major projects in the works, S&C Slatter is showing no sign of slowing down, with the next 30 years looking just as bright as the last.

30 Years of Sporting Excellence

S&C Slatter have evolved to become a leading one-stop shop for sports facility design, planning, finance, construction and maintenance.
